Vaginal Yeast Infection Symptoms

Even in these enlightened days, many women are still hesitant about discussing health conditions that affect them in what they consider to be their "private parts". Unfortunately, this often results in a lack of knowledge about many issues that affect women in particular, including vaginal yeast infections. Ignorance isn't bliss when it comes to this condition. You need to know what to do to both treat and prevent a yeast infection, so it's important that you learn to recognize the symptoms of this uncomfortable condition. The sooner you realize what the problem is, the sooner you can get effective yeast infection treatment.

The most common symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection include inflammation in the vaginal region, a lot of itching, and quite frequently a discharge that is whitish in color and looks like cottage cheese. Other symptoms include a burning sensation while urinating and during menstruation. Frequently there will also be discomfort or pain during sexual relations.

These vaginal yeast infection symptoms are very typical, and they're really quite apparent also. Other symptoms, though, are less apparent and aren't even typically thought to be linked with a vaginal yeast infection. For instance, headaches aren't usually thought to be a vaginal yeast infection symptom. Neither are depression and fatigue. The fact is, though, that these can be symptoms of a systemic yeast infection. You might also feel pain in your joints, memory problems and difficulty with mental focus. An overgrowth of yeast in your system can cause all these things.

Often, vaginal yeast infection symptoms will vary according to the individual. They might also change over time, meaning that you can have completely different symptoms a day or two down the road, even though it's all the same yeast infection.

Once you're able to identify vaginal yeast infection symptoms, the next step is to treat the condition. If it's your first yeast infection, visit your doctor to confirm the diagnosis. If you've had one before and recognize the signs, you can head to the pharmacy for some over the counter yeast infection creams or suppositories. If these aren't working after the prescribed amount of time, then ask your doctor for a stronger treatment.

Left untreated, a vaginal yeast infection can soon become systemic. So it's important that you get it treated as soon as possible. You will also want to prevent future episodes of this annoying condition, so you should look into making some lifestyle changes and consider using natural remedies to keep your yeast problem under control. For example, diabetics and alcoholics are at increased risk of developing yeast infections.
