A person's memory is really a very complex process. It involves recalling facts and events from many years ago. It even involves remembering recent details such as where our car keys are kept and the name of a person we just met. Unfortunately, one of the absolutes about getting older is the inevitable loss of some memory ability, which can be more than just an annoyance at times. Some loss of short-term memory may be inevitable, however use of certain tricks can delay or help you regain lost memory function. Here are a few good tricks for increasing recall and memory, which should help you to remember those important appointments and details of each day.

For starters, you can use a strategy known as a mnemonic device to help you improve your short term memory. There are different kinds of mnemonic devices, so you can use one that seems to be most effective for you. An example of using visual mnemonics to improve memory skills might be to imagine an object when you hear a name, such as picturing a microphone when you meet a person named Mike.

There is another technique which a lot of people find useful. They use either a rhyme or an acronym to remember things such as keyboard notes or the order of the planets. Other ways gain an improved memory can also be learned. One way to better your short term memory is to try to focus more attention on details being given. This could include the names of people or places, or dates and times. If possible, try to use more than one of your senses as you take in new information. Focus on a new acquaintance's face and pay close attention to their name. It's essential to repeat the name aloud once or twice for it to get registered in the mind.

If you are a visual learner, it will help to picture information in your head or take notes. Auditory learners should vocalize the information aloud or listen to it played back at a later time.

You can improve your short term memory using other ways which are good for the rest of your body too. Sound sleep and physical exercise help to keep both body and mind fresh. Managing stress can also help to improve your ability to retain information. Likewise, it is very important to eat healthy and kick your smoking habit. Cognitive functioning can be adversely affected by smoking, due to reduced oxygen delivery to the brain.

These tricks for retaining information can be very useful for those who have memory concerns. You might come to realize you have a lot more cognitive abilities than you thought.
