What keeps you from getting a good night's sleep? Is your mind going over everything that happened that day? Are you worried that you won't have enough time to do everything that needs to be done tomorrow? Are you faced with a tight deadline? For any of these problems, maybe what you need is a natural approach to insomnia that will help you sleep more soundly. Here's a look at some natural sleep remedies that should help you avoid resorting to medication in order to get a good night's sleep.

Enjoying a cup of herbal tea before bed is a great way to relax your mind and body. There are several herbs that are natural sedatives, including chamomile, mint and lemon balm. You can get these at most health stores and simply brew yourself a soothing cup of tea before going to bed at night. Warm milk is another traditional favorite for inducing sleep, especially if you add a bit of honey to it.

Another herb that's useful as a sedative is lavender. Get some lavender essential oil and put a few drops on your pillow at night to help you slip away to dreamland. A melatonin sleep aid is another natural way to regulate your body's hormones to help you sleep better.

Although herbs can be highly beneficial sleep aids, there are other strategies that can help you get a deep, restful sleep. For example, don't watch TV in bed; it's actually more stimulating than it is relaxing. Reading a book can help some people relax sufficiently to drop off to sleep - especially if it's a boring one!

You should definitely avoid napping during the daytime, as this will disrupt your normal sleep patterns at night. Eliminate caffeine from your diet, entirely if possible, and certainly in the hours leading up to bedtime. Although an alcoholic beverage might help you fall asleep faster to start with, it will disrupt your sleep patterns through the night and wake you up, so avoid it entirely.

Sometimes insomnia stems from a problem with your mattress. An old, lumpy mattress isn't conducive to comfortable sleep, so you should consider getting a new one. At the least, buy a new mattress topper that's well padded.

A great way to relax before bedtime is to engage in meditation. Simply sit quietly and calmly for fifteen minutes and focus your thoughts on a single calming word or image. If your worried thoughts try to interrupt, simply dismiss them and go back to your calm center. Soft background music or the sounds of nature can also be helpful in preparing your mind for sleep.
