Sciatica Causes

If you're experiencing difficulties with a medical condition known as sciatica, it's essential to learn as much as you can regarding this condition and what it is that causes sciatica nerve problems. Firstly, it's essential to be aware of what sciatica is. Sciatica gains its name from discomfort that's felt in either of the two sciatica nerves that run down through each leg. The pain can range from mild to intense. Normally, the discomfort is experienced in the hip and lower leg. Sciatica can also result in knee pain.

It's believed that sciatica is quite widespread. Indeed, it's estimated that each and every person will suffer from the misery of sciatica at least one time in their lives. Consequently, it can be very useful to the affected person to understand what causes sciatica nerve problems and the forms of treatment that are available.

Sciatica isn't so much an illness or disease as it is a disorder that's triggered by various factors. There are a number of different causes of sciatica nerve problems. Rather commonly, it's a result of the normal aging process. As the human anatomy matures there's a subsequent deterioration of the anatomy, including the backbone. As the vertebrae degenerate, they start to slide into one another, which results in the sciatic nerve being pinched.

One more typical cause of sciatica nerve problems is a herniated disk. Disks are found between the vertebrae in the spinal column. They are hard on the outside, and filled with a viscous fluid. Their purpose is to provide a buffer between the individual vertebrae. When the disks become damaged, usually due to some sort of trauma, the filling escapes and starts to bulge. This in turn places pressure on the sciatic nerve.

There are a number of options when it comes to sciatic nerve pain treatment. The initial approach is typically to apply cold compresses to the painful region, and this should be done within the first 48 hours of the problem becoming apparent. The suggested procedure is to utilize an ice pack for ten minutes, remove it for 10 minutes and then repeat several times.

One of the best treatments for sciatica is to perform targeted stretching exercises. As well, simply remaining mobile can do a lot to ease the pain. This works by improving the blood circulation and easing the tightness in the affected region.

I've suffered with sciatia for a 1 1/2 yrs. It affected me all the time, even in my sleep. I couldn't lay flat, couldn't immediately straighten up after sitting. I had difficulty walking, bending and exercising. I tried physical therapy, acupunture, muscle activation techniques, heat, advil - they just didn't help. I found the only thing that finally saved me was chiropractic treatment where they also used heat and cold compresses, massage & and an ultrasound device all together and that helped me to become normal again w/i 6 wks.
